The Issue

In mental healthcare, cultural humility has emerged as an effective approach for delivering high-quality care to all patients, including those of wealth and power.

While often associated with minority groups that occupy positions of relative powerlessness, cultural humility is also crucial when working with clients from backgrounds of privilege and power.

“Approaching patients of wealth with cultural humility requires clinicians to cultivate self-awareness, respect, and a willingness to learn from the client’s experiences and worldview. It challenges them to address their own perceptions of what it means to be a person of wealth and push through the complex emotions that surround this unique identity.”
